Management platform for Gloster canary competitions
A platform covering the full lifecycle of a breeding competition: from the breeder entering their birds through to the results table and prize labels, taking in counter reception and blind judging along the way. Two spaces — club and breeder — and a dozen automatically generated PDF documents.
A Gloster canary competition means several hundred birds entered by dozens of breeders across two days — the 2025 edition analysed beforehand counted 476 entries from 34 breeders. Until now everything lived in Excel files and paper forms: the entry list, cage allocation, the judge's ranking, then the results table copied out by hand on prize-giving night. Every re-copy is a chance to introduce an error, and an error in the results is paid for in disputes.
Three requirements that are hard to hold together. Judging anonymity first: it rested on a verbal instruction, and therefore on trust, while it underpins the legitimacy of the ranking. The pace of the day itself: at reception the queue moves, and nobody has time to hunt for a breeder in a spreadsheet. And document output: cage labels, receipts, results, per-class statistics — all expected within the day, each carrying the club identity, the president's stamp and signature.
Laravel 11 and MySQL 8, with Filament v3 for the secretariat, judge and admin screens — the back office is the bulk of the need and amounts to CRUD and tables; a bespoke build would have cost weeks for a worse result. Blade and Livewire for the public screens. Four distinct roles (admin, secretariat, judge, breeder) because judging anonymity has to be guaranteed by the system rather than by instruction: the judge's screen simply does not hold the exhibitor's name. Business rules sit at the point of entry rather than in a rulebook — class barred by age, one ring per edition, pricing applied automatically by member status. Club settings (logo, bank details, stamp, signature) feed every PDF, so the platform adapts to another club without touching the code.
The platform covers the full chain, from online registration to the season Top 10, and works on mobile: a breeder can enter their birds from their phone on the day. Results are no longer re-copied, they are generated; cages are allocated automatically once paid; and a winning chick's title flows straight back into its breeder's log.
